Frequently Asked Questions

How do I receive services from a nurse that specializes in Ostomy Care?

If you are currently receiving nursing care through the Home and Community Care Support Services (HCCSS), speak to your nurse and they can arrange for a nurse specialized in Ostomy Care to visit you. If you are not receiving nursing care at home, there are monthly Ostomy Clinics, free of charge in Pickering and Oshawa. Call the below numbers for an appointment:

Durham Medical, Oshawa

1-888-479-4687 or

The Medical Supply Store, Pickering  – 1-877-839-6209

How can I plan for my life with an Ostomy after surgery?

After recovery, your life can resume with some minor alterations. Your hospital nurse and/or dietician will address specific food and fluid recommendations. You may be referred for nursing care at home once discharged from hospital where your home nurse will answer any further questions you may have. As you heal, your specific ostomy equipment may change, and your nurse or doctor can help you.

How do I pay for my Ostomy equipment?

If your Ostomy is permanent, you may apply for funding through the Assistive Devices Program which will help to offset your costs. Private insurance may cover Ostomy supplies whether you have a temporary or permanent Ostomy. If your Ostomy is temporary and you have no insurance coverage, you will be required to pay for your supplies.
